Good grammar is essential to good writing. It is simply the process of using the correct words in the right place. It gives a written piece proper flow, and makes the reader able to understand what ideas the writer is trying to convey. When used improperly, a written piece can come to a sudden halt. When it comes to writing, grammar is the rulebook. Many books have been written on the subject, but here are a few simple grammar tips that are easy to follow.

One of the most common mistakes to make is the misuse of Your and You're. When Your is used, an object belongs to the subject. "Here's your purse, Mom.", is a good example. You're is a contraction of you are. An example of this would be "You're going the wrong way."

Another mistake seen frequently is not using Its and It's in the correct manner. When Its is used, the subject has a modifier. "Each fingerprint has its own unique pattern." It's is a contraction of It Is. "It's going to rain tonight."

One of the more helpful tips to improve grammar is to reduce the use of adverbs. Adverbs describe the subject. They usually end in -ly, and are considered to be far too overused. Trimming a piece of these needless, descriptive words will make for a better read.

The usage of Who versus Whom is a tricky one. These pronouns are usually used when asking a question about a person. Whom is to be used when the answer is "him" or "her". If the question is, "Whom did you speak to?". The answer is, "I spoke to him." Who is to be used when the answer is "he" or "she". The question "Who told you to do that?" is answered by "She told me."

Affect and Effect are another pair of words used incorrectly. Affect, a verb, is used when something is being influenced by something else, as in "The flu affected his health.", effect is a noun. It is something that can be observed. "The special effects in this movie are amazing."

The Dangling Participle can make a sentence difficult to understand. A participle is an adjective that ends in -ing or sometimes -ed. Their placement wit.
