A new study from University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) showed that inhaling nicotine increases the risk of heart attack. This risk is not limited to people who previously or simultaneously use cigarettes. The effects of inhaling the nicotine was the same for non-smokers and smokers. According to the study, "E-cigarettes . inflict life-long damage on nonsmokers' hearts that is similar to tobacco cigarettes." The study concentrated on effects of inhaling nicotine rather than effects of the chemicals within the vaping fluid. While inhalation of non-nicotine vapors did not cause rises in adrenaline, e-cigarettes with nicotine caused increases in adrenaline that can lead to heart attacks. The other key factor in predicting heart disease is oxidative stress, which prevents the body from effectively protecting itself from free radicals known to contribute to heart disease. A previous study at UCLA linked chronic e-cigarette use to oxidative stress in the same way as in traditional cigarettes. Dr. and around the world that link e-cigarettes to a wide range of risks -- including DNA damage -- at the same rate as with traditional cigarettes. A study done by UCLA a little more than a year ago also showed that e-cigarettes contain toxic substances that act to "kill the top layer" of cells in the mouth. Researchers reported "roughly 85 percent" of the tested cells were destroyed by the vaping process. E-cigarette use also killed natural antioxidants in the mouth that help fight off disease. Unrelated studies also found cell-death and immune suppression in the mouth and the nasal cavity. Probably best known is the risk from the liquids that create the "vaping experience." Medical doctors have warned that e-cigarette liquids contain chemicals approved for ingestion, not for inhalation. Many of these are known to be toxic to human tissue. Scientists at Harvard found diacetyl, for one, in 39 out of 51 e-cigarette flavors. Other studies have shown e-cigarette use increases the risk of bladder cancer, arterial damage and respiratory disease.
